Cultural appreciation or appropriation?

“Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalizations or sterotypes where it originated but is deemed as high fashion, cool or funny when the privileged take it for themselves.”

It’s certainly not the first time and won’t be the last time cultures are used as inspiration for fashion lines. Tip toeing the line of cultural appropriation; Valentino’s Spring/ Summer 2016 Africa inspired collection was described by Valentino as “primitive, tribal, spiritual, yet regal”.

Seventies Swag.

Seventies styling is in full swing for spring/summer and I could not be happier to incorporate an era that represents such freedom and expression into our wardrobes. Strong prints, swooping bellbottoms, denim and suede are back with a vengeance!

The feminine prints, flowing fabrics and soft palettes by industry icons such as Chloe, Etro and Zimmerman have paved the way for inspiration to create a flawless boho look. However, what I’ve loved this spring is the side step away from a full 70’s revival to a slightly quirkier remix illustrated perfectly by Ellery.

To avoid that dreaded “themed party” faux pas:

Scent is a vital, yet extremely overlooked element of style. It’s able to instantly make or break a first impression regardless of how well you are dressed or spoken.  So powerful, it can communicate without saying a word and as one of the strongest parts of the human sensory, it stimulates emotion, tells a story and even evokes some of your deepest memories.

With so much emphasis lately on individualism and unique styling, it is baffling to think why we spend so much time and money on that killer outfit, only to smell like everyone else. (more…)

Balancing Act.

Lets not dress it up.  The fashion world lacks diversity! Yes, we are making progress but there is no doubt we have a long way to go.

I was hit with this sobering reality when I heard commentators call spring 2016 one of the most diverse yet.

However Business of Fashion reported only 797 of the 3,875 model bookings this season were models of colour.

In order for the industry to truly represent the world we live in, pay attention to foreign markets and online retail. Those statistics surely have to rise as it is not only good casting, it is good business.
