Just like the movie itself, the Black Panther Red Carpet event was in a league of its own. Celebrating everything that is African culture, the release of the film has set a new era of excitement and empowerment amongst the African diaspora and with good reason. This is a film we’ve been waiting a long time for and there’s proof in the numbers.
In just under a week since opening night, the film Black Panther broke all the box office projections. Once considered a gamble for the studio, this movie sold the most presale tickets for the first day out of any Marvel movie put out to date. It made $192 million over Family Day weekend, coming in just behind The Avengers. Proving that this movie was something the black community, and the rest of the world for that matter, were yearning for all along.
With such huge buzz and excitement around an all-black cast, the premiere night was a night that we’re sure will be marked throughout history with fashion looks to match. Take a look at how the talented and stylish cast stacked up.
Lupita Nyong’o, a vision in purple. This lady has always been a queen in our eyes, and on this red carpet, she dressed the part. In a sophisticated plunging gown, it was more than just the jewel tone that gave this outfit its royal appeal. Extravagant jewel hardware adorned the neckline and shoulders in a look that only Lupita could pull off. Her stylist Micaela Erlanger told The Hollywood Reporter that “there’s definitely a nod to her warrior character Nakia here.”
The queen vibes just kept coming with Janelle Monae’s dark take on a traditional princess gown. The flattering black gown featured a classic feminine shape while feature sleeves were a nod to a modern trend. Both flattering and bold, this outfit seemed to blend the old with the new for a truly breathtaking result.
Dressed the part of an Ethiopian goddess, Yari Shahidi showcased a dress with tribal-inspired embroidery and tassel-trims. Her beautiful natural hair, a perfect accessory to this powerful feminine ensemble.
In the colour of the season, Angela Bassett slayed in this mustard jumpsuit. Her stylist Jennifer Austin explains, “I love colour and Angela looks amazing in it so I wanted something that had a regal Nubian tribal feel. I wanted her to look bold and sexy with beautiful texture. I also wanted her to have movement – so this beaded yellow Naeem Khan was perfect!”
While we last over these beautiful red carpet looks, you can catch us at the cinemas watching this ground-breaking movie again and again.
