A Fight For Colourism in the Beauty Industry

Nyma Tang is a self-taught beauty blogger that struggles to find cosmetics that complement her darker skin tone. In her Youtube channel ‘The Darkest Shade’ she raises awareness for the lack of inclusivity within the makeup industry.

Since starting her Youtube channel, Nyma has tested out and reviewed the darkest shades of makeup that a brand or line carries. To show the beauty industry areas, they need to improve on as well as express the lack of variety in both what shades are created, and what stores keep the darker shades in stock.

Nyma also produced the channel to guide and enthuse individuals with similar skin tone to experiment with makeup, and for them to have an example of what makeup should look like on comparable skin colours.

With Nyma enlightening her listeners about the limited range of makeup available for darker skin tones, she’s hoping more conversations on the issue can increase the productivity of the beauty industries diversity.

Her vision for the future is for people of her skin colour to be able to go to their local pharmacy and be able to purchase a generic foundation that suits their skin tone, without any prejudice.
